Published by Hirmer, Munich 2015

Available in bookstores as of June 2015

This catalogue accompanies the exhibition ‘Lucas Cranach the Younger – Discovering a Master‘ shown at Collegium Augusteum, Lutherhaus Wittenberg, Germany, June 26, 2015 – November 01, 2015, and presents the 13 rare and impressive German Renaissance drawings by Lucas Cranach the Younger and Lucas Cranach the Elder, drawn from the rich collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims.

On the occasion of the 500th birthday of Lucas Cranach the Younger, this artist will be given the first monographic exhibition ever. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims, has given Art Centre Basel the exclusive right to present these works as part of this exhibition in Wittenberg, with a spectacular display of all 13 drawings united in one show. Because of their fragility, these drawings were usually not presented at the museum in Reims or in rotation only. Since 1974, on the occasion of the Cranach exhibition at Kunstmuseum Basel, this series of works has not been shown together outside of France.

These drawings will form the centerpiece of the exhibition and provide significant insights into the artistic practice of both Lucas Cranach the Younger and Lucas Cranach the Elder.

The catalogue includes scholarly essays on the Cranachs’ work and their oeuvre, as well as the fascinating history of the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims and new exciting research findings.
